Rupert Everett takes a swipe at Jennifer Aniston's career - tasteless and too many flops

'Tasteless... with one too many flops': Rupert Everett takes a swipe at Jennifer Aniston's career

My Best Friend's Wedding star Rupert Everett has slammed Jennifer Aniston's career in a new radio interview.

The 51-year-old British actor claimed Hollywood's power players promote people they consider stars, despite poor performances the box office.

'If you look and analyse the careers of many, many stars, you'll find that they're mostly sustained by the business,' Everett told BBC Radio 4.

'You'll find there's lots of women and lots of men in the business that the powers that be decide are right for their business, and they'll stand with them for quite a long time.'

He then used the 41-year-old star of Just Go With It, The Bounty Hunter and The Switch as an example.

'OK, something will go wrong, like Jennifer Aniston will have one too many total flops, but she's still a member of that club,' Everett continued.

'And she will still manage to… like a star forming in the universe, things will swirl around her and it will suddenly solidify into another vital tasteless rom-com, a little glitter next to the Crab Nebula.'

He also had Oscar-nominated actor Colin Firth in his sights.

'Colin Firth I don't think was at all good in Mamma Mia! I would have thought it was almost a careericide,' Everett sniped.

Everett did manage one compliment, however. 'On the other hand, I think [Firth's] performance in A Single Man was the best performance of his life.'

His comments were part of a broader claim that the Hollywood film industry is plagued by homophobia.

Everett, who came out as gay in the late 1980s, believes the decision damaged his career.

'Showbusiness is ideally suited for heterosexuals - it's a very heterosexual business, it's run mostly by heterosexual men, and there's a kind of pecking order.'

He added: 'I just never got a job there [in Hollywood], and I never got a job here, after [coming out]. I did a couple of films, I was very lucky at the beginning of my career... and then, I never had another job here for 10 years probably and I moved to Europe.

'Hollywood is an extremely conservative world that pretends to be a liberal world.'

Jennifer’s Perfume is a Stinker - Sales Are Down!

Are sales of the signature fragrance from everyone’s favorite Friend not smelling so sweet?

Jennifer Aniston’s having a bit of a rough time lately. With actor Rupert Everett taking her to task over her “tasteless” career recently, her life’s hardly a bed of roses. Here’s another less-than-rosy picture that’s plaguing the actress: sales of Aniston’s perfume are reportedly down in the UK. Want more dish on her fragrance folly? Read on, beauty fans!

According to E! Online, sales for Aniston’s signature scent, originally called “Lolavie” but released simply as “Jennifer Aniston,” are down since the fragrance’s launch in London this past summer. The cause? Reportedly Aniston hasn’t done much to support sales of the fragrance.

A rep for the actress vigorously denies the rumor, stating “It’s absolutely not true…The fragrance was launched specifically for [London's famed department store] Harrods and Jennifer went there personally to launch it and to do press.”

Aniston’s rep goes on to defend the star, saying, “”The launch was one of Harrods’ most successful with the fragrance selling out that day… The U.S. launch of the fragrance will happen sometime this coming year and Jennifer will be actively promoting the launch here in the U.S.”

I hate to interject here, but is one visit to promote the launch of a fragrance on another continent really all you can do to promote a fragrance bearing your own name? Katy Perry was on BOTH continents promoting her fragrance this fall.

Oh well, time will tell moving into the stateside launch of Aniston’s fragrance. Hopefully the US launch will smell sweeter for the busy actress and retailers, as it appears UK sales kind of, well, stink.

Will YOU buy Jennifer Aniston’s fragrance when it hits stores in the US this year?
